Leadership Symposium - August 2019

The 2019 Beacon Leadership Symposium began with the introduction of New Beacon Scholars and a welcome to visitors.

Outstanding leadership and academic achievements of Beacon Scholars in the past year were recognised with Trustee Commendations:

  • Betty Kunyada: achieved 4A*, 4A and 1B in Common Entrance, and the Headmasters Award in Leadership and Community Service
  • Shakinar Mutulili: achieved 5A*, 4A in iGCSE
  • Alexa Ouma: achieved 4A*, 4A, 1B in iGCSE, and was awarded the Year 11 Effort Prize
  • Mirengeri Diallo: applied for Yale Young Global Scholars Programme and was awarded a scholarship for their summer programme
  • Amy Migunda: won the Achievement Award for her year group, for the 3rd year running
  • Zawadi Mwambeyu: achieved 2A*, 3A in her A-levels
  • Trisha Shah: won the Faculty Prize for coming top in the whole of Cambridge for Civil Law
  • Anne Arum: achieved a First in her first year results at the University of Surrey
  • Naikena Mutulili: achieved a First in her first year results at Cardiff University; also, with sister Shakinar, achieved a slot on KTN News where they spoke about their joint Citizenship project, Freedom within Kenya
  • Darryl Ursin: graduated from LSE with a First in Actuarial Science
  • Farzana Huysman: graduated with Masters in Engineering at University of Cambridge, with Distinction, and won the Sir George Nelson Prize in Applied Mechanics (top mark in Mechanical Engineering)

We welcomed our Keynote Speaker Anne Huysman, who gave a thoughtful address about her personal experience as a parent of a Beacon Scholar. Her daughter Farzana who has just graduated, addressed Beacon Scholars by video (see Farzana's video on her Profile page).

Scholars then presented their Summer Citizenship Projects divided into 4 themes: Vulnerable People, the Environment, Education, and Health. Finally we concluded by inviting new Scholars to briefly share their Citizenship experiences.
